State tuberculosis (TB) control authorities will be initiating a project under the synonym Directly Observed Treatment (DOT) under the sponsorship of the World Health Organization (WHO) from January 1 next year.
State TB officer Dr G Binodkumar said that WHO has already provided medicines and vehicles for the implementation of the project aimed at eradicating TB from the State.
The programe is being implemented under the Revised National TB Control Programme (RNTBCP), he said.
The doctor said that DOT programme was conducted in 39 districts of the country including Imphal and Dibrugarh in the North East in 1998.As the pilot project was a success, the WHO has decided to launch the programme statewide.
As many as 38 NGOs will take part in the programme, he said adding that a WHO team will visit the State on December 9.India accounts for 28 percent of the world burden of TB and every day more than 1000 people die due to the disease in the country which is more than one person per minute.
